Hard Surfaces FAQ

What’s the difference between paving stones and poured concrete? Paving stones are individual units set on a compacted base, which lets them flex slightly with ground movement instead of cracking. Poured concrete is a single slab, so any settling or freeze-thaw movement tends to show up as visible cracks. In the Okanagan’s freeze-thaw climate, paving stones generally hold up better over time and any damaged stones can be replaced individually instead of redoing the whole surface.

Can flagstone be used for a driveway? Yes, in some cases. Flagstone driveways work best with proper base preparation and are typically better suited to lighter, less frequent traffic than a daily-use driveway. We’ll assess your site and traffic patterns to confirm whether flagstone is the right fit or whether paving stone is a better match.

How long does a hardscape installation last? A properly installed paving stone, flagstone, or porcelain tile surface can last decades with basic maintenance.
