This project was about more than improving a backyard — it was about creating a space where life happens. The homeowners wanted a functional outdoor area where they could entertain friends, spend time with family, and create lasting memories with their grandchildren. By transforming the steep, unusable yard into a welcoming and well-designed landscape, the space now invites connection, relaxation, and meaningful moments outdoors.

Key Features:

  • Tiered Retaining Wall System – Multiple retaining walls were built to push back the steep slope and create flat, usable outdoor space.
  • Custom Hardscape Features – The project includes a Techo-Bloc Borealis paver boardwalk and raised patio, Barkman Architextures retaining walls, planter beds, and transitions such as steps.
  • Artificial Turf Putting Green – A custom artificial turf installation provides a low-maintenance, functional and a unique entertainment feature to the space.
  • Drainage and Grading Improvements – The landscape was regraded and rebuilt from the ground up to properly manage water flow on the sloped property.
  • Architectural Landscape Lighting – A Kichler lighting system with step lights, in-ground putting green fixtures, and spotlights to highlight key features.
  • Decorative and Functional Features – Elements such as a custom water feature, privacy screens, fencing, and stepping stones add personality and structure to the landscape.

Challenges:

  • Drainage Problems – The property experienced ongoing drainage issues that needed proper grading and water management.
  • Steep Backyard Slope – The yard had a steep grade that limited usable space and required structural retaining walls.
