Their unique company uses The Great Game of Business which is a business methodology that brings the company numbers to the team and engages them in financial literacy as well as business planning, operation and success.  Through this they learn valuable financial skills that they can use to improve their personal lives.

Another reason Creative Roots Landscaping supports safe drinking water by donating to Lifewater is to live into the Creative Roots core value, Prove You Care.  Here in the Okanagan where washing cars and irrigation is the norm, it is hard to imagine that for others on our planet access to a glass of safe drinking water is a daily life and death struggle.  So supporting the Lifewater Canada belief that “everyone has a right to safe, accessible drinking water” is an impactful way to prove the team cares about the global community.   

At Creative Roots Landscaping each employee generously donates one hour of their wages each week to a GiveBack Fund.  These wage donations amount to approximately $1100 per month, enabling this giving to happen.

For the Creative Roots team, giving back is part of why they do what they do.  They believe that running a business is an opportunity to share many of the great things life has to offer – camaraderie, friendships, challenge, learning, growth, a sense of community and profits.  With this sharing they hope more local businesses will embrace the concept of turning their time into money for the good of the community.

The Creative Roots Landscaping team has generously donated $2,500 to the Kelowna branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. They chose to support mental health because they, too, have felt the stress and challenges brought on by the pandemic and inflation. Recognizing that many have even fewer resources, they wanted to help.

Prioritizing Mental Health

Without mental health, overall well-being suffers. The Creative Roots team appreciates the support systems available to them. Their group benefits include access to psychological care, and they also have an internal certified coach to help with personal and professional development.

With this $2,500 donation, they hope to make a positive impact on those in the community who lack similar resources. By giving back, they aim to support mental wellness beyond their own team.

Living Core Values

One of Creative Roots Landscaping’s six core values is “Prove You Care.” This means intentionally building strong relationships with their team, clients, and community. Strong relationships create connections, and these connections improve mental health and make life more fulfilling.

For this team, core values aren’t just words on a poster. They live by them. In fact, demonstrating these values is an employment expectation. As a result, their team culture is one where everyone supports each other.

Giving Back Through Open Book Management

Creative Roots Landscaping follows an Open Book Management system. Every week, employees meet to discuss company finances, team success strategies, and the impact of their achievements.

To support the GiveBack program, each employee donates one hour of wages per week, adding up to $1,300 per month. This collective effort funds charitable contributions like this mental health donation.

Are you a year round, head down, working hard in the business leader?  You’re not alone!  When do you work on your business?

Seasonal businesses have their pros and cons.  A big pro is the time to work on the business.  A big con is not generating revenue in the off season.  Creative Roots Landscaping is a successful seasonal business.  March through December we are Landscaping FULL-ON – to the power of 10!!  Then in January and February we make time for some R & R.  Rest & Relaxation indeed, and so much more:

• Review and Revise; systems and processes
• Repair, Replace and Refit; equipment, vehicles and machines
• Rest, Recuperate and Recharge; people

If you’re head down working all year round, when do you do take care of these important tasks?

Winter is our perfect time to Review the previous year.  Reflect on what worked and what didn’t.  Revise, Replace or Remove anything that didn’t work.  You too can use this simple 3 step process to improve pretty much anything:

1. Reflect – what worked well, what didn’t, and what you would do differently
2. Replace – anything that didn’t work effectively
3. Remove – all Redundancies

To improve any aspect of business or life:

• Schedule time to work on it
• Reflect on a specific time period in the past and write down 3 lists:
  1. What worked/What you did well
  2. What didn’t work/What you could have done better
  3. What you will do differently next time
• Review the lists to determine your next steps:

KEEP doing the #1 stuff, STOP doing the #2 stuff, START doing the #3 stuff!

Remember, you can’t just keep adding stuff to your full plate!  If you add something, you have to drop something else. What are you going to drop?

From accounts payable through client journey to trailer organization, or, sleep quality through nutrition to exercise, make time to look at every aspect of your organization or life on a regular basis.  Make it a habit.

Reflect, Replace & Remove will not only reduce down time, it will extend life and increase value.
