2. Can I See Examples of Similar Work?

A portfolio is a good starting point, but the follow-up question matters more: have you done projects like mine?

A company that excels at residential lawn maintenance isn’t necessarily equipped to design and build a complex outdoor living space with retaining walls, a pool surround, and custom hard surfaces. Scope and complexity matter. Ask to see projects that are similar to yours in scale and style, and pay attention to the range and detail in what they show you.

3. Who Will Actually Be On My Property?

The person who sells you the project isn’t always the person who builds it. That gap is where a lot of things go sideways.

Ask who will be supervising day-to-day, how experienced the crew is, and whether the company uses subcontractors. None of those things are automatic red flags, but you deserve clear answers. A company with a well-structured, experienced team should be able to tell you exactly who’s responsible for your project and what their background is.

4. What Does Your Design Process Look Like?

This question separates companies that show up with a shovel from those that actually plan.

5. How Do You Communicate During the Project?

Who is your main point of contact once the project starts?
How are changes or unexpected issues handled?
What’s the process if you have a concern mid-build?

These aren’t hypothetical questions. On any meaningful project, things come up. The difference between a smooth experience and a frustrating one usually comes down to whether the company has a clear, reliable communication process in place.

A company that can answer this question confidently has clearly done it before. One that fumbles it probably has the reviews to match.

6. What’s Included in the Quote, and What Isn’t?

Scope creep can be one of the biggest sources of bad experiences in the landscaping industry. A quote that looks competitive on paper can grow significantly once the “extras” start appearing.

Before you commit, ask for an itemized breakdown and get clarity on what would trigger additional charges. Change orders, unforeseen site conditions, material upgrades — these things happen, and a transparent company will tell you how they handle them upfront rather than after the fact.

If a company is reluctant to provide detail, or the quote is suspiciously vague, that’s a pattern worth taking seriously.
